The round, blunt tip allows the needle to pass through and slide into the fabric without breaking or tearing the fibres.
The smaller, finer size 22 is used for cross-stitching.

John James's wool needles with rounded tips
For counted thread embroidery on canvas and open weave fabrics, "blunt tip" wool needles (i.e. with a rounded tip) are ideal. With a large eye suitable for threading thick threads or wool.
Use them with wool, soft embroidery cotton and twisted cotton yarn; you can work on canvas, canvas, Aida and open-knit fabric, including wool.
